Mahabaleshwar Gem of the Western Ghats

Mahabaleshwar situated in the Satara District of Maharashtra at 1372 metres above sea level is the jewel of the Western Ghats. Surrounded by five rivers namely Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri it is the origin point of the mighty Krishna River. The name means God of Great Power in Sanskrit.

History and Heritage

Mahabaleshwar was discovered by Colonel Lodwick in 1824 and later popularised by Sir John Malcolm Governor of Bombay. It became the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency under British India. The Britishers built various mansions cottages and bungalows lending the town a charming and sophisticated character that you can still sense today.

Before the British, Mahabaleshwar was the stronghold of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The legendary Pratapgarh Fort 24 km from the main market was built by Shivaji in 1656 and is the site of the famous Battle of Pratapgarh. A defining moment in Maratha history.

Mahabaleshwar is part of the Sahyadri mountain range which is a UNESCO World Heritage Biodiversity Hotspot. The forests are home to leopards, barking deer, Malabar giant squirrels and over 200 species of birds. The 30 plus viewpoints offer some of the most spectacular panoramas in India.

Mahabaleshwar produces over 85 percent of India's strawberries. The cool climate and high altitude create ideal conditions. During the harvest season November to May you can pick strawberries directly from the farm.
